Newlyn High Performance Squad (HPS)

At Newlyn School we have a strong tradition of sporting excellence with several of our past pupils going on to represent teams at a National and International level in a number of different sports.

We recognise the value that competitive sport adds to a child's education and we therefore offer the opportunity for some of our more talented sporting children to harness their ability and develop their sporting excellence through a range of High Performance enhancements in our High Performance Squad (HPS)

These take place during curriculum time and we therefore expect a high level of commitment from our participants not only in the sporting arena but also in being prepared to make up any studies missed from any other curricular areas. We demand excellent levels of behaviour, not only at HPS but also across all school areas and we envisage HPS pupils to be models of behaviour and attitude.

The HPS programme includes visits to specialist sports venues, engagement in high quality sports events and learning how to maintain a healthy lifestyle to aim towards becoming an elite athlete of the future.

HPS Policy

Golf was delivered over 4 weeks at Hayle Driving Range and short course by Cornwall Golf. The children learnt how to hold a golf club correctly, how to address the ball and how to play a variety of different shots using a range of different clubs. They practiced on the driving range and then went on to the shourt course to hone their skills.

Rugby was delivered over 6 weeks by Jam Rugby who came in to school and taught the children how to pass and catch the ball correctly, how to tackle and find space and how to play as part of a team and follow the rules of the game. The children were also fortunate enough to visit the Mennaye, home of rugby in Penzance, to see where the players train and play.
