Newlyn School

Art

At Newlyn School, we believe that every child is an artist.

Our Art curriculum encourages children to explore their creativity, express their ideas, and develop a deep appreciation for the visual world around them. Rooted in the rich artistic heritage of Newlyn and Cornwall, our curriculum provides pupils with opportunities to study influential artists, experiment with a wide range of materials, and develop their own authentic artistic voice.

We want every child to see themselves as an artist — confident to take risks, reflect on their work, and celebrate individuality and imagination.

We have been inspired by Kaytie Holdstock's Art Expedition and use this approach to guide children on a creative journey that values curiosity, exploration and discovery.

Knowledge Progression

Black History Month

Every October we celebrate Black History Month at Newlyn School.

Throughout the month, our assemblies spotlight influential Black figures from history and today—sharing stories of courage, creativity, and change. These moments help our pupils understand the impact of these individuals and the importance of celebrating diverse voices.

Each class explores the life and work of a Black artist, diving into their style, themes, and cultural significance. Pupils then create their own final piece inspired by what they've learned, expressing their understanding through colour, form, and imagination.

To celebrate the children's work, we host a school-wide exhibition where families are invited to view the artwork, talk with their children about their learning, and even take part in hands-on creative activities. It’s a joyful opportunity to share, reflect, and make art together.

Art Reading Spine

At Newlyn School, our Art Reading Spine has been carefully designed to enrich and deepen pupils’ understanding of art, artists, and creativity. We believe that high-quality texts can inspire curiosity, spark imagination, and help children see the world through an artist’s eyes. Reading about artists’ lives, creative journeys, and different art forms allows pupils to connect ideas, emotions, and cultural influences, supporting their development as thoughtful and reflective young artists.

Whole School Overview of Learning

Golowan

Every summer, Newlyn School proudly takes part in Penzance’s iconic Golowan Festival, bringing colour, creativity, and community spirit to the streets.

Our celebration begins with a collaborative art project where the entire school helps design and build a spectacular Mazey Day structure. This centrepiece reflects our chosen theme and showcases the imagination and teamwork of our pupils and staff.

Every child plays a part - whether crafting decorations, props, costumes, or smaller artworks to accompany the main structure. It’s a joyful, hands-on experience that blends art, culture, and local heritage.

On Mazey Day, pupils are invited to join us in the vibrant parade through Penzance, proudly walking alongside their creations. Families line the streets to cheer them on, celebrating the children’s hard work and the spirit of Golowan.

Golowan is a highlight of our school year - a chance to connect with our community, honour Cornish traditions, and let creativity shine.
