Miss Tyrrell

Year 1 Teaching Assistant

Hello and Welcome to the Summer Term in Year 1, - Porthenys Class. (Porthenys is the old Cornish name for Mousehole). Both myself, Mrs Squires and Ms Tyrrell cannot believe where the time is going and as we enter this last term, we are so proud of how far your children have progressed on their learning journey with us.

I hope this page countinues to be a useful site to refer to for a general overview of what is happening this term, but if y have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

We will be having PE each week, it is useful to have PE kit and trainers in school all week. We will also have swimming this term. Also, as the Cornish weather can change as quick as a flash, please ensure your child has their coat/wet weather gear in school, if possible a pair of wellies are really helpful as we aim to be outside everyday!

Please continue reading with your child every day - a minimum of 10 minutes will help with their progress. We all know how important learning to read is, we will continue to send home a Little Wandle reading book to be read every day. Your child will also have a book of their choice from the library, it might be they need you to read this one to them.

The following continues to be a really helpful focus for your children, the spellings given out to practise at home each week, along with the tricky words we are focusing on and the graphemes your child is learning. The more they practise reading and writing these, the easier it becomes for them to read them automatically and use them in their writing. I can't emphasis enough how important the first steps in reading are at this age. Together we really can give your child the best start for a life long love of reading.

Please continue to use maths.co.uk for links to help your child continue practising the skills they have been learning this year. There are just a few questions set each week and they help consolidate learning or help me identify where I can help them further. Their password is in their reading diary - if you have any problems locating it, please let me know.

We have some exciting trips coming up this term and as always I think we all appreciate the really helpful, supportive work Mrs Spiller does to follow up on class messages and in supporting us all as our Class Rep.
