Welcome to Year 3 – Syllan Class

Welcome to the Year 3 Syllan Class page!

Our class is called Syllan, which is the Cornish name for the Isles of Scilly. As a Year 3 class, the children are beginning an exciting new stage of their learning as they transition into Key Stage 2.

Syllan class is taught by Mrs Jackson and Mr Hickman, who work together to provide consistency and support for the children.

  • Mrs Jackson works Monday to Wednesday and is the main point of contact on these days.
  • Mr Hickman works Thursday and Friday and is the main point of contact on those days

Our Learning

Throughout the year, Syllan class will explore a range of exciting topic themes. These themes are carefully planned to ensure learning is meaningful, engaging and connected across the curriculum.

Children will study a wide range of subjects, including:
PE, RE, PSHE, French, Music, Art, Design and Technology, Science and Computing.

  • In Geography, pupils will learn about volcanoes, rivers and biomes.
  • In History, learning will include Mary Anning, the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age, as well as the Roman invasion of Britain.

Enrichment Opportunities

To enhance learning beyond the classroom, all children will have the opportunity to take part in a variety of enrichment activities during the year, including:

  • Swimming lessons (during the Autumn, Spring or Summer term)
  • Forest School sessions in the Autumn term
  • Beach School sessions in the Summer term
  • Learn to Ride training through Bikeability in the Spring term

Home Learning Expectations

At Newlyn School, we love reading! Children should read to an adult at least five times a week. Please remember to sign your child’s reading diary when you hear them read.

Reading together is a valuable opportunity to share stories and spark imagination. After reading, we encourage you to ask questions about the text using the VIPERS question stems provided at the beginning of the year.

Regular practice of times tables is essential to develop fluency and quick recall. In Year 3, children begin preparing for the Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check, which requires rapid recall of all facts in the 2,3,4,5,and 10 times tables.

Children know which tables they are focusing on in class and should practise these daily at home. Times Table Rock Stars (TTRS) is a great resource to support this learning.

Year 3 teacher

As a teacher, I believe in the power of creativity, compassion, and connection. My approach is rooted in nurturing each child’s individuality and inspiring a love of learning through curiosity and expression. I’m passionate about creating inclusive, supportive spaces where children feel confident to explore, grow, and thrive. I live in beautiful Newlyn and feel incredibly lucky to be part of this vibrant community. I studied at Falmouth University, and my love for art and creativity has guided much of my journey. I have three children who attend the school, and when I’m not teaching, I enjoy walking the coast path, reading, and cooking for my family.

Year 3 teacher

I am an experienced outdoor educator with a strong passion for nature-based learning and physical development. As a Forest School leader, I create enriching outdoor experiences that help children build confidence, resilience, and a deep connection to the natural world. I am committed to promoting children's sporting abilities by providing inclusive and engaging opportunities for physical activity across all age groups. Outside of school, I enjoy sea swimming and spending time with my family. As a parent myself, I understand the importance of fostering a supportive and inspiring environment for every child. I also believe that a sense of humour and joy are essential in education—laughter helps build strong relationships and a positive learning culture.
