At Newlyn, we are delighted to say that we follow the Jigsaw PSHE curriculum from Foundation to Year 6. We are a Flagship school and welcome school visits if you are interested in this curriculum. 

Jigsaw is a mindful and child-centred approach to PSHE. It is an original and comprehensive scheme of learning which integrates personal, social, health and economic education with emphasis on emotional literacy, mental health and SMSC, especially spiritual development.

Jigsaw aims to help children know and value who they really are and how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world.

PSHE and RSE

INTENT:

At Newlyn School we value PSHE  and RSE as one way to support children’s development as human beings, to enable them to understand and respect who they are, to empower them with a voice and to equip them for life and learning.  We aim to teach them the key building blocks of healthy, respectful relationships, focusing on family and friendships, in all contexts, including online. This will sit alongside the essential understanding of how to be healthy.

 

IMPLEMENTATION:

 To ensure progression and a spiral curriculum, we use Jigsaw, the mindful approach to PSHE, as our chosen teaching and learning programme and tailor it to your children’s needs. The mapping document: Jigsaw 3-11 and statutory Relationships and Health Education, shows exactly how Jigsaw and therefore our school, meets the statutory Relationships and Health Education requirements.

 

Jigsaw covers all areas of PSHE for the primary phase including statutory Relationships and Health Education. The table below gives the learning theme of each of the six Puzzles (units) and these are taught across the school; the learning deepens and broadens every year.

Summer 1:	Relationships	Includes understanding friendship, family and other relationships, conflict resolution and communication skills, bereavement and loss
Summer 2:	Changing Me	Includes Relationships and Sex Education in the context of coping positively with change

 

At Newlyn School we allocate 1 hour to PSHE each week in order to teach the PSHE knowledge and skills in a developmental and age-appropriate way.

These explicit lessons are reinforced and enhanced in many ways:

assemblies and collective worship, praise and reward system, through relationships child to child, adult to child and adult to adult across the school. We aim to ‘live’ what is learnt and apply it to everyday situations in the school community.

Class teachers deliver the weekly lessons to their own classes.

IMPACT:

Our children are able to discuss concerns, issues and feelings with members of staff and each other. They are able to understand similarities and differences between people and the need to respect others. They are able to use the Calm Me technique to self-regulate. They have a good understanding of how to stay safe, healthy and develop good relationships.

 

 Parents’ right to request their child be excused from Sex Education

“Parents have the right to request that their child be withdrawn from some or all of sex education delivered as part of statutory Relationships and Sex Education” DfE Guidance p.17 At Newlyn School, as puberty is taught as a statutory requirement of Health Education and covered by our Jigsaw PSHE Programme in the ‘Changing Me’ Puzzle (unit), we conclude that sex education refers to Human Reproduction, and therefore inform parents of their right to request their child be withdrawn from the PSHE lessons that explicitly teach this i.e. the Jigsaw Changing Me Puzzle (unit): Year 4, Lesson 2 (Having a baby) Year 5, Lesson 4 (Conception) Year 6, Lesson 4 (Conception, birth)

 

 

 

 

 

 Jigsaw PSHE actively promotes children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development.

On December 16th Newlyn school had a day of reflection. The children created self-portraits in the style of an artist they have learnt about during their time at Newlyn School. When making their self portraits the children reflected on the year that had passed and hopes and dreams for the new year to come. There was the most amazing calm atmosphere around the school and a huge amount of creativity. 

On Friday 10th February all the children took part in a day of reflection. We focused our day on a selection of gorgeous picture books that link to our school virtues. The reflective thinking and outcomes were beautiful. From incredible poetry to stunning emotion filled letters and excellent art - the children and staff had a wonderful day.
