Computing

Intent:

At Newlyn School, we recognise that computing is an essential part of everyday life. Our aim is to equip pupils with the skills and confidence they need to thrive in today’s digital world.

We believe every child should have the opportunity to develop the life-skills that will help them embrace new technologies responsibly and safely. Through our computing curriculum, pupils are encouraged to become independent, capable users of technology who approach learning with confidence and enjoyment.

By engaging with our computing framework, pupils develop creativity, resilience, problem-solving abilities, and critical thinking skills—preparing them not only for their future education, but also for life in an increasingly digital society.

Implementation:

We follow a skills-based curriculum which ensures progression and coverage of:

  • Computer Science – problem solving, programming, logical thinking and wider understanding.
  • Information Technology – creating content and net searching
  • Digital Literacy – E-safety
  • Digital Literacy – using IT beyond school.

Impact:

Our computing curriculum is planned to demonstrate progression. We measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:

  • A reflection on standards achieved against the planned outcomes
  • Children can understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including logic, algorithms and data representation
  • Children can analyse problems and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs
  • Children are responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology
  • Evidence of computing used, recorded in shared folders accross the curriculum
  • Pupil discussions about their learning.

We follow the National Teach Computing Curriculum, below is the journey outlining the focus areas of the computing  curriculum.

To further support children, we also use Natterhub, an interactive online safety and digital literacy platform designed especially for primary-aged children. Natterhub provides engaging, age-appropriate lessons that help pupils understand their digital footprint, make safe and positive choices online, and develop the confidence to navigate the internet responsibly. By introducing these skills early, we empower our pupils to thrive in the digital age while protecting their wellbeing.
