At Newlyn School, we are passionate about reading. We have spent some years developing our Newlyn Reading Curriculum document which outlines our approach to reading and phonics.
In Key Stage 2 we have a novel study approach to reading and a similar approach to the teaching on non-fiction texts.
Each text we have chosen for a narrative study has been carefully selected for reasons identified in our Book Level Planning documents. Please see an example of one of these documents below.
Reading News!
In February we held an evening Pyjama party where the children were invited into school just as dusk descended to snuggle up with fairy lights, a hot chocolate and a fabulous book in their classes. Meanwhile, the parents met up in the hall and were presented with a brilliant presentation about the joys and importance of reading at home. This was accompanied by a humorous video about how not to read with your child (rushing in the car) and what is a good example of reading at home.
Because our PJ party was so successful, we decided to make bedtime stories our World Book Day theme this year. The whole school arrived in their pyjamas and brought along their favourite bedtime book and took part in all sorts of reading related fun - including some beautiful illustration work inspired by books we are reading in school.
See the gallery above for photos of both of those events.
