Porthia Class (Year 2) Information and news

Welcome to our year 2/3 Class, which is known as Porthia Class. (Porthia is the old Cornish name for St Ives).

I'm Mrs Squires the class teacher, if you have any questions please don't hesitate to get in touch - either a note in the reading diary, catch me after school or email me. My email address is csquires@newlyn.tpacademytrust.org and can also be found on the newsletter attached.

PE is on a Thursday afternoon, although it is useful to have PE kit and trainers in school all week!

A few helpful pointers:
Please read with your child on a daily basis, at least 10 minutes a day.
Children in year 2 need to know their 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables.
Children in year 3 need to know the above and counting in multiples of 3, 4, 8, 50 and 100. Regular practise of these at home really helps. We use Times Table Rock Stars to help build up our quick recall of the times tables, you can log onto this at home.  https://ttrockstars.com/

Spellings are given out on a Monday, please learn these over the week for a spelling check on the following Monday. Your child can also access Spelling Shed to practise their spellings. If you have any difficulty logging onto these online resources, please speak to me. https://www.spellingshed.com/

If you would like more ideas, please let me know.

World Book Day 2023!
We shared our favourite stories and explored the work of Quentin Blake's illustrations. We then completed our own illustrations - they are amazing!
We have made sculptures in Art. These have been based on Alberto Giacometti's work. We now need the sun to come out so we can see the shadows they cast, we'll then truly understand the word elongated.
Here are some pictures of our Pyjama Party. We talked about how to get to sleep easily and what to do if you can't get to sleep. Then, we shared fabulous stories, a few of us told our own stories too - we showed confidence and great imagination!
As a treat, we had hot chocolate and cookies and relaxed listening to Mrs Squires reading some short bedtime stories to us. Some of us got so snuggly, we almost fell asleep!
English, taking a moment to enjoy our book, Journey by Aaron Becker. We've loved this magical story.
We went outside to see where our magical pieces of chalk would draw our imaginations to.
Our visit to Land's End Airport, Spring 2023
Our Christmas Dinner.
Our Art focus has been around cave art linking to the Stone Age. Here is our class display...
We went to Carn Euny! It was amazing.

We explored and thought about what it would have been like to have lived there. We talked about why it would have been such a good place to live and settle.

There was a well and also a Fogou. Fogous are a distinct type of monument found only in the far west of Cornwall. Here are some pictures of our time there.
Our Tennis Taster Session.
