Expectations and information for this term and the importance of parental support.

Homework: Reading is an essential part of the children’s learning and life and without feeling confident in this area, it makes many things more challenging. Because of this, the children are expected to read for at least 15/20 minutes each day and for this to be recorded in their reading records. Please help to remind your child that these should be in school every day to enable us to sign them. It would be beneficial to spend some time talking to your children about the book to check their comprehension and discuss their thoughts about what they are reading.

The children will also receive weekly spellings which will be tested each Friday. The children will also be given new spellings on a Friday which gives them a week to practise them on SpellingShed.  Occasionally, an additional task may be set to support learning in the classroom and to support preparations toward SATs.

PE Kit: Please ensure that your child has a full Newlyn School PE kit in school – it must be labelled with their name. The children’s PE lessons will be on a Monday and Tuesday however, it is important to have PE kit in school all week for clubs and additional sporting activities. It is important to remember that PE is an important part of the National Curriculum and not optional.

To support our Geography learning, Year 6 had a workshop with Castaway Ropes (a local company) who remove ghost gear from our oceans and transform it in to beautiful, handcrafted homewares. To support the world-wide fight to remove plastic from our beaches, the children visited Newlyn Green and used their incredible beach cleaning skills to remove debris from our beautiful beach. In total, they removed a shocking 75kg of discarded waste from the beach including: ghost nets, micro plastics, a tyre, a metal bar and numerous chunks of rope. What a fantastic effort Year 6!
To conclude their geography learning, Year 6 had a workshop with local designer Flotsam Flo. Kate is dedicated to recycling objects such as inflatables, paddling pools, canopies, life jackets, umbrellas, blow up beds, wetsuits and lots more that would usually be going to landfill. The children first made some initial designs, conducted consumer research amongst their peers and then had fun creating using the new skills they had learnt.
As part of their history topic, Crime and Punishment, year 6 visited Bodmin Jail. They were given a guided tours around the jail and learnt all about notorious Cornish criminals, experienced what it would have been like to be a prisoner during the Victorian era and experienced the long drop. There were a few screams!
During our learning about Crime and Punishment, the children learnt about the infamous Dick Turpin. They wrote information texts all about the 19th century criminals: Highwaymen. They also studied Macbeth and wrote some superb news reports about the death of King Duncan.
As part of our Year 6 responsibilities, we have been visiting our buddies in Foundation to share our favourite stories
Each term, we have a different focus artist; this term we have been studying Jason Scarpace. Scarpace likes to create abstract pictures of sea creatures using vibrant acrylic paints. We have also been looking at the technique of Batik. A method of creating designs on fabric by first using wax and then dye. Take a look at some of our fabulous creations.
As part of their History topic World War 2, Year 6 researched the different types of shelters that would have been used during WW2. They then design their own model Anderson shelter. Once they were created, we tested to see if they were waterproof and bomb proof. How do you think we did?
Recently, the children have been learning all about The Blitz. To support their learning, they have written some fantastic setting description and then created some Blitz artwork
